Bee Confident!
Algebra Foundations
Summer Program
Because success in math is about more than content knowledge - it’s about communicating your thinking effectively, building resilience, and developing the skills to navigate math anxiety and approach challenges with courage.
Helping Students Rewrite Their Math Story
-
For many students, math challenges aren't just about content gaps. They can also stem from years of frustration, self-doubt, or anxiety that make it difficult to fully engage with learning.
Maybe your student understands more than they realize but hesitates to participate because they're afraid of being wrong. Perhaps they've started to believe they're "just not a math person." Or maybe they simply need an opportunity to strengthen foundational skills without judgment before taking on more advanced concepts.
Bee Confident! gives students the opportunity to strengthen the mathematical foundation that supports success throughout high school while building the self-belief needed to approach future challenges with resilience, curiosity, and courage.
-
Success in math requires more than knowing how to solve equations. As students move through middle school, high school, and beyond, they are expected to manage increasing academic demands, communicate their thinking clearly, advocate for themselves when they need support, and persevere through challenges that may not have an immediate solution.
Throughout Bee Confident!, students will strengthen the foundational algebra skills that support success throughout high school mathematics while also developing the habits and mindsets that contribute to long-term academic growth. Together, we'll explore practical strategies for organization, managing academic pressure, navigating math anxiety, collaborating effectively with others, and approaching challenges with resilience.
Students will leave Bee Confident! with a toolkit that helps them feel prepared, capable, and empowered as learners both inside and outside the classroom.
-
Every student arrives with a unique combination of strengths, challenges, experiences, and beliefs about themselves as a learner. Some students need support strengthening foundational skills. Others need help developing organizational systems, managing academic pressure, or rebuilding confidence after difficult experiences in math. Many need a combination of all of the above. That's why Bee Confident! is more than just summer math tutoring, it's a comprehensive learning experience designed to support the whole student.
Even more importantly, this program will help students begin developing a healthier relationship with math, which can have a positive impact on overall self-esteem. They'll learn that mathematics is not always easy, and that struggling with a concept, making mistakes, or needing additional support are normal parts of the learning process—not signs that they aren't "good at math."
My goal isn't for every student to leave believing math is their favorite subject. My goal is for students to leave the program as stronger thinkers: learners who are more willing to ask questions, persevere through challenges, learn from mistakes, and trust their ability to figure things out when the path forward isn't immediately clear.
Because when students learn to trust themselves as thinkers, they don't just become better math students, they become more confident learners.
Real Learning Doesn’t Usually Happen in Isolation.
Learning is inherently social. Every day, students are asked to collaborate with classmates, communicate their thinking, ask questions, receive feedback, and work through challenges alongside others. Bee Confident! is intentionally designed to reflect these experiences in a supportive environment where students can strengthen both their mathematical understanding and their confidence as learners.
Enrollment is intentionally limited to just 12 students to provide individualized support and meaningful opportunities for collaboration. This small cohort size creates the flexibility to meet students where they are while also helping them develop the communication and problem-solving skills that will serve them throughout their academic careers.
Throughout the program, students will engage in a variety of learning experiences, including independent practice, partner work, small-group discussions, and whole-group collaboration. These experiences allow students to practice explaining their thinking, asking thoughtful questions, listening to different perspectives, and contributing meaningfully to academic conversations in a low-stakes environment.
Learning challenging mathematics doesn't have to mean sitting quietly and completing worksheets all summer. Students learn best when they are actively engaged in the process, and play remains one of the most natural ways children learn. Bee Confident! incorporates games, collaborative challenges, discussion, and opportunities for exploration to help students interact with mathematics in meaningful ways. My goal is to create an environment where students can take learning seriously without feeling like every moment has to feel serious.
Because Bee Confident! welcomes students with a range of ages, experiences, and mathematical backgrounds, collaboration can be intentionally structured to meet the goals of each activity. Sometimes students will work alongside peers with similar needs to receive targeted support and appropriate challenge. Other times, they'll learn from classmates whose experiences differ from their own. A younger student may gain insight from an older peer, a student who understands a concept may deepen their own learning by teaching it to someone else, and a quieter student may discover that sharing an idea with a partner is the first step toward speaking confidently in front of a group.
Perhaps most importantly, the cohort experience helps students realize that they are not alone. They begin to see that confusion, mistakes, questions, and moments of uncertainty are a normal part of learning, not something to hide or be embarrassed by. As students learn alongside one another, they often become more willing to take academic risks, participate in discussions, and persist through challenges because they understand that growth is something everyone is working toward.
Bee Confident! is meant to feel like more than a summer program. I want students to leave knowing they are part of a community of learners who support one another, celebrate growth, and understand that learning is something we do together, not alone.
Leave with Tools for the Classroom…
and Skills for Life
Learning math isn't just about solving problems. It's also about developing the habits, resilience, and confidence needed to navigate challenges both inside and outside the classroom. Your student will…
Strengthen
Algebra
Foundations
Students will strengthen the foundational algebra skills that support success throughout middle school and high school mathematics. Through targeted instruction, guided practice, and meaningful discussion, students will build a deeper understanding of key concepts while identifying and addressing gaps that may be limiting their progress. The goal isn't simply to memorize procedures, but to develop the mathematical reasoning needed to approach new challenges with greater confidence and independence.
Build
Organization Skills
and Academic Habits
Success in mathematics requires more than understanding the content. Students must also learn how to manage assignments, organize information, prepare for assessments, and develop routines that support consistent growth. Throughout Bee Confident!, students will explore practical strategies for organization, time management, note-taking, and studying so they can approach their academic responsibilities with greater confidence and structure.
Communicate
and Advocate
for Themselves
Being successful in school means knowing how to ask questions, explain your thinking, seek support when needed, and participate in meaningful academic conversations. Students will practice communicating mathematical ideas, collaborating with peers, and developing the self-advocacy skills needed to navigate increasingly complex academic environments. These skills help students become more confident participants in their own learning.
Develop
Resilience and
Critical Thinking
Learning is not always easy, and mathematics often requires students to work through uncertainty, frustration, and mistakes before reaching a solution. Bee Confident! helps students develop the mindset and strategies needed to persevere through challenges, learn from setbacks, and approach difficult tasks with curiosity rather than fear. My goal is for students to leave with a healthier relationship with challenge itself, understanding that growth often happens when we are willing to keep going, even when the answer isn't immediately clear.
Meet Your Teacher,
Ms. Algebray
Hi! I'm Ellisa Bray, more commonly known as Ms. Algebray.
For the past 15 years, I've worked with students across public, private, and charter school settings as a classroom teacher and private tutor, helping them strengthen their mathematical understanding and build confidence as learners. Along the way, I've learned that success in math requires way more than just content knowledge. Students also need support developing the habits, resilience, and communication skills that help them navigate challenges both inside and outside the classroom.
Bee Confident! was created from all the best parts of being part of my classroom, plus everything I wish I could provide: the methods and tools I use to scaffold student understanding and deepen engagement, the academic support that holds students accountable while giving them room to mess up along the way, and my desire to embed valuable organizational skills and leadership habits that have an often-overlooked impact on how students engage with mathematics.
My sincere wish is for you and your student to feel empowered and supported throughout this program as we work together toward your goals. Let's get started!
Is Bee Confident! Right for Your Student?
Every student arrives with a different math story.
Some students need support strengthening foundational skills. Others need help building confidence, developing stronger academic habits, or learning how to navigate challenges more effectively. Most students see pieces of themselves in more than one of these experiences, and that's exactly why Bee Confident! focuses on supporting the whole learner, not just the math.
While every student is unique, many of the students in Bee Confident! identify with one or more of these archetypes:
-
This student has worked hard but may have missed important concepts along the way. As mathematics becomes more complex, those gaps begin creating frustration and making new learning feel more difficult than it needs to be. They often find themselves saying, "I don't get it," when the real challenge is that they're missing a few key pieces needed to make everything else click into place.
These students are frequently far more capable than they realize. Once foundational concepts are revisited and strengthened, they often experience significant growth because new learning finally has something solid to build upon. Their challenge is not a lack of ability, but a foundation that needs reinforcement.
-
This student is capable of understanding the material but struggles to keep track of assignments, notes, deadlines, or study habits. They often know more than their grades reflect because organization, planning, and executive function skills, rather than mathematical ability, create obstacles to success. They may frequently lose papers, forget assignments, or feel overwhelmed by responsibilities that seem easy for their peers to manage.
These students are often creative, capable, and full of potential. Their challenge is not whether they can learn the material, but whether they have developed the systems needed to consistently demonstrate what they know. As academic demands increase, strong organizational habits become just as important as strong academic skills.
-
This student cares deeply about doing well and often earns strong grades, but experiences significant stress when faced with challenging problems or unfamiliar concepts. They may become frustrated when answers don't come quickly, avoid taking risks, or place tremendous pressure on themselves to be perfect. From the outside, they often appear successful. On the inside, they may spend a great deal of energy worrying about making mistakes.
These students are often highly motivated, conscientious, and invested in their learning. Their challenge is rarely a lack of effort. More often, it's learning how to embrace mistakes as part of the learning process, tolerate productive struggle, and recognize that their worth is not determined by a single grade, assignment, or answer.
-
This student has begun measuring their mathematical ability against the people around them. Sometimes it's a sibling who seems to "just get it." Sometimes it's a parent who always loved math. Sometimes it's classmates who appear more confident or successful. Over time, these comparisons can shape the way students see themselves as learners, causing them to overlook their own progress, strengths, and potential.
These students often underestimate how much they have grown because they are focused on someone else's journey rather than their own. Their challenge is learning to recognize that growth is not a competition and that mathematical success looks different for every learner. Confidence often begins to grow when students start measuring progress against their own starting point rather than someone else's.
-
This student often understands concepts quickly and is eager to move on once they feel they've found the answer. They may rush through assignments, skip steps, make avoidable mistakes, or become frustrated when asked to show work that feels obvious to them. In discussions, they often have ideas to contribute but may struggle to explain their thinking in a way that others can follow.
These students are frequently confident, energetic, and willing to take risks, which can be a tremendous strength. At the same time, they may benefit from developing greater precision, patience, and awareness of their own thinking process. Their challenge is rarely a lack of ability. More often, it's learning how to slow down long enough to fully demonstrate what they know.
These archetypes are drawn from some of the most common experiences I've observed throughout my years in the classroom and as a private tutor.
Time and again, I've found that students rarely struggle because they "aren't good at math." More often, they are navigating challenges related to confidence, organization, communication, foundational gaps, or the way they see themselves as learners.
The good news is that these are all skills and habits that can be developed. When students receive the right support, learn effective strategies, and begin to better understand themselves as learners, meaningful growth becomes possible.
